The online casino and sports betting market in West Virginia, which has been rapidly growing since 2019, might be facing a monumental new development. The recent statement from the West Virginia lottery director, John Myers, announces the possibility of online poker being introduced to bettors in the state.

Myers’ stance supports the ongoing talks about expanding the availability of online gambling for WV residents. After the state legalized online casinos, sports betting, and online poker in 2019 and joined the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, interest among West Virginians has rapidly grown.

By joining Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada in the MSIGA, West Virginia Lottery officials have removed the small player pool barrier. This agreement allows poker operators to share player pool liquidity and opens the door for online poker games and tournaments.

However, despite the legalization and recent advancements in the industry, online poker might be a challenging endeavor to take on. West Virginia has a population of 1.8 million, and organizing and maintaining the network for just residents of the Mountain State could be challenging.

West Virginia Lottery Director John Myers remains confident. In a recent interview, he was asked about the lack of online poker. He responded firmly, saying, “We are ready when they are.”

The initial rumored plans were that online poker is coming to West Virginia at the end of 2024, but those expectations were not met. Despite the disappointment for online poker, 2024 was a generally positive year for other gambling services in the state. The Horseshoe Online casino by Caesar’s went live, and Oddin.gg was granted a temporary license to launch in August.

Which Video Poker Operators Might Launch First

BetMGM’s outlook for launching online poker services is promising. It is already available in several US states. The brand operates within the Party Poker US Network and BetMGM Poker skin. BetMGM is the only provider with an integrated poker network within its sportsbook and casino platform. Both the sportsbook and casino are available in West Virginia. The brand also holds a license to operate in the state.

Another brand that could enter the multi-state network and West Virginia is WSOP Online. They have already shown interest. Push Street Interactive’s BetRivers Poker is also a contender for this market. They are a licensed sportsbook and online casino operator in the state. Other promising brands include PartyPoker, Pokerstars, and possibly even BetMGM’s Borgata.

In order to be able to offer online poker services alongside other casinos and sports betting, potential West Virginia operators must apply and receive an official license. Then, the regulator should approve the site to share the poker pool with the other MSIGA member states. The public expects the poker sites to launch relatively quickly in the coming months.
