Attempts to Legalize Gambling in Alabama
In February 2024, the Alabama House of Representatives passed two bills, HB151 and HB152, which proposed regulating commercial gambling in the state.
HB151 defines the legalization of retail and online sports betting and a state lottery. Moreover, the bill would also authorize the state to negotiate a gaming compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI), which runs three casinos in Montgomery, Wetumpka, and Atmore.
At the same time, the HB152 bill proposed the creation of a state lottery and gaming commission that would regulate and oversee all gambling activities in Alabama. The Alabama Gaming Commission would issue licenses to operators, control the market, and include a law enforcement division. In other words, the new commission would oversee all aspects of gambling.
