The biggest casinos doing business in the Evergreen State are located in Auburn, Tulalip, Snoqualmie, Airway Heights, and Tacoma. Some counties even allow non-house-banked card games, which can be played in commercial cardrooms.

Slots aren’t part of the offering, and the reason for this goes back to the time when the state negotiated compacts with the tribes. They couldn’t agree on whether the 1988 Indian Gambling Regulatory Act included slots, so they left out this type of game.

A court ruling from 1997 confirmed that the state didn’t have to permit slot machines, although it was still required to allow the introduction of similar devices. The tribes chose lottery terminals linked together to a central computer operated by tribal gaming authorities. Lottery terminals look and feel virtually the same as video slot machines, with only technical differences.

Poker

Fans of the popular card game can find plenty of small and medium-sized poker rooms in Washington. They are operated by tribal casinos and non-tribal operators. In addition to cash games, there are many tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $10 to $50. These events are hosted almost on a daily basis.

Apart from poker, card rooms in Washington can also offer non-banked versions of table games. However, this doesn’t include Class III games like roulette and craps.

Overall, the poker scene in Washington is very lively. On the other hand, there are no internet options, as internet poker is a felony. From 2015 to 2018, there were attempts to legalize online poker through HB 1114, but the efforts were in vain.

Sports Betting

Washington made sports betting legal in 2020, becoming the first US state to adopt a bill that granted rights to wagering on sports to tribal operators. The bill limited sports betting to land-based tribal casinos, while any online activities remain illegal.

However, a local operator filed a lawsuit against both the state and federal authorities, claiming the state’s sports betting legislation was unconstitutional. Maveric Gaming claimed the sports betting compacts directly breached the Fifth Amendment.

Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of the tribes. The judge pointed out that the lawsuit attempted to make tribal compacts invalid, violating the tribal sovereign rights.

Daily Fantasy Sports

Like all forms of online gambling, daily fantasy sports contests are also prohibited in Washington. It’s considered a felony, while all efforts to make it legal have so far failed to produce any results.

Lottery

Although the lottery was founded in 1972, it never became part of the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Luckily for Washington residents, Powerball and Mega Millions are available under a separate agreement. The list of available intrastate games includes Lotto Daily, Game, Daily, Keno, Match 4, Hit 5, and various scratchers.

Multiple daily lottery drawings aren’t allowed, while tickets can be purchased solely from land-based outlets. There’s no option to get them online.
