Lawmakers in Louisiana have introduced new legislation that could significantly reshape the state’s sports betting market. The proposal aims to ban both proposition bets and live micro-bets at licensed sportsbooks.

The measure, Senate Bill 354, was introduced by Katrina Jackson-Andrews and would amend the current definition of a legal sports wager in the state. Under existing law, sportsbooks can offer a wide range of betting markets, including prop bets tied to specific events or player performances.

What the proposed law would change

If the bill passes, sportsbooks in Louisiana would no longer be allowed to offer:

Proposition bets, which are wagers on specific aspects of a game that do not determine the final outcome

Micro-bets, defined as live prop bets placed during a game on the result of an individual play or action

The proposal removes prop bets from the list of permitted wagers and explicitly prohibits operators from accepting or paying out on these markets.

The legislation would otherwise leave the state’s broader sports betting framework intact.

Possible start date

If approved by the legislature, the changes would take effect on 1 August 2026, giving sportsbooks time to adjust their offerings and systems to comply with the new rules.

Part of a wider US trend

Louisiana is not the only state reviewing prop and micro-betting markets. Regulators and lawmakers across the United States have raised concerns about potential integrity risks and the possibility that these bet types could be more vulnerable to manipulation.

Several states, including Maryland, Ohio and Vermont, have already moved to restrict certain prop bets in recent years, particularly those tied to college athletes.

If the Louisiana bill becomes law, sportsbooks operating in the state may need to rethink their product strategies, as player props and micro-bets have become a major driver of engagement and betting volume across the US market.
